“The hand of the artist" is an expression for art that includes an acknowledgment of the artist, or exposes the artifacts and remnants of the artist's process within the work itself. In the case of the late Italian artist Mario Mariotti (1936–1997), the art literally was his hands. With paint and some simple props, Mariotti contorted his hands into expressive little people and animals in moments of fear and joy and documented them with his photographer, Roberto Marchiori. Two of their long out-of-print books, Humands and Hanimals, are wholesomely excerpted here, after being shelved for far too long.
