Roger Gastman, Darin Rowland, and Ian Sattler’s 2006 book Freight Train Graffiti explores the history of art where freight train cars are the canvas. You might be familiar with contemporary graffiti and street art on train cars, but Freight Train Graffiti also details the history of the form, dating back to when hobos and rail workers communicated directions on cars and developed the first system of monikers that anticipated modern-day tagging and street art. And of course, there’s the eye-popping work of more than 100 artists who’ve established an integral part of urban and transcontinental landscapes.
